It is, perhaps, as well to state that this work has been done with the knowledge of the War Department of the United States, which has very kindly allowed me to reproduce some of the pictures in its archives and has greatly helped me with my researches in its public records. When I have visited those few points of his toric significance still occupied by the army I have been very courteously shown all points of interest not of pres ent military value and have been allowed to photograph scenes which I desired to record which would have no worth to an enemy of the country.
