Publisher's Synopsis

When considering the psychological consequences of the Second World War and the Nazi era, the focus is more on victim experiences than Nazi perpetrators in the family. With all today's historical knowledge of National Socialism, there is often an avoidance of this topic in the family context up to the present day. Using Sigmund Freud's archeology metaphor, Ulrike Pohl presents a psychoarchaeological layer model that can facilitate access to this topic. Subjective experiences are understood here as psychological layers that build on one another. In this way, the complexity and inconsistency of human experiences can be represented. There is an opportunity to avoid the dichotomous victim-perpetrator thinking and to establish a closer connection between family history and historical facts. Advice on the therapeutic approach and case studies provide suggestions for practical application.
