Qu'on me permette de revenir ici sur le groupement que j'ai cru devoir établir pour l'étude des patois vaudois. Si je le fais c'est que je crains de n'avoir pas été assez clair dans la partie de l'introduction qui s'y rapporte. En principe je partage complète ment la maniere de voir qui paraît actuellement dominer, en France du moins, et d'après laquelle il n'y a pas à proprement parler de patois,1 mais seulement des faits phonétiques à combinaisons in finies. Si j'ai cru néanmoins devoir établir une classification des patois vaudois c'est dans un but purement pratique et pour me faciliter la tâche, dans la mesure où je pouvais le faire sans porter atteinte à la valeur scientifique de mon travail. Car en somme, il ne faut pas l'oublier, la différence entre les deux méthodes est plus apparente que réelle: l'exposition sans doute diffère du tout au tout, mais le résultat en est identique. En d'autres mots rien ne serait plus facile, par exemple, que d'établir avec les données de mon travail une série de tableaux en tout semblables2 à ceux de M. Gilliéron, et réciproquement de donner à son atlas la forme que revèt mon étude sur les patois vaudois.
