Tais si la nature, fidelement reproduite, ell'ace nos yeux les combinaisons de l'art les plus ingenieuscs; si la passion vraie, pro fonde, eloquente, sutlit a remuer nos coeurs sans le secours des aven tures merveilleuses et des catastrophes inouies; si, peu soucieux de multiplier les personnages, le poete a su trouver dans la connaissance unique du coeur humain de quoi animer la scene, varier les evene ments, faire naitre les peripeties les plus soudaines et les plus ton chantes, alors le Pbilcetete sera pour nous, parmi les oeuvres du genie antique, l'une de celles qu'on n'a surpassees en aucun temps, dans aucun pays.
