Publisher's Synopsis
The year is 1936, long before the mass migration of Caribbean people to the Mother Country. A socially ambitious mother is making plans in Jamaica, determined that her daughter should receive the best education money can buy. Gloria Carter is thirteen when she is sent to a progressive London grammar school from her native Jamaica. She endures many hardships including a return to the Caribbean during war, then back to England and Cambridge followed by a controversial mixed marriage, full of tenderness, frustrations and fireworks.
