Publisher's Synopsis
Excerpt from Olde Ulster, 1906, Vol. 2: An Historical and Genealogical Magazine
Out Ward of the City of New York. The approach of the enemy determined the Congress to provide for the safe keeping of these records in the most thorough manner and a committee was appointed to take them in charge. It is worthy of notice that every one of the four members was from Ulster county and this commit tee decided to bring them to Kingston in June, 1776, although this place was not made the capital until in February of the next year. The recordsarrived here on June 16th, 1776, and remained until October 12th, 1777, four days before the burning of Kingston, when the Committee removed them to Rochester, in view of the capture of Forts Clinton and Montgomery on the 6th of the same month, and the opening of the Upper Hudson to the operations of the enemy. It will be seen that the forethought of the committee had secured these invaluable archives four days before the arrival of Vaughan.
