Ce livre a ete inspire par une affection desinteressee pour La Fontaine, car il ne repond, dans son ensemble, a aucun programme. Et pourtant il est destine au public scolaire autant qu'au grand public; et il comblera peut etre sous la forme de cette edition ou d'une autre, peu importe une lacune trop visible dans la litterature classique. Nos eleves ne connaissent guere de La Fontaine que ses Fables, auxquelles on ajoute parfois P/1ilenzon et Baucz's; et il est vrai que c'est aux Fables qu'il faut tou jours revenir. Mais ce n'est pas dans la fable seule que le souple genie du poete se fait admirer dans l'epitre en vers, dans la lettre melee de vers et de prose, il est sans rival en son temps. On etudie d'assez pres dans les classes les epitres de Boileau; plus legeres d'allure, plus variees de ton, les Epitres de La Fontaine meritent mieux que de figurer a l'etat de fragments dans les recueils de morceaux choisis. Sa correspondance et bien des pieces diverses valent aussi qu'on les fasse entrer dans le grand courant de nos lectures, de nos explications classiques. Nos programmes gagneraient a etre elargis et renouveles par l'introduction, non pas d'auteurs nouveaux, mais de parties nouvelles des auteurs qui nous sont familiers.
