Inhaltsangabe: Einleitung: Die Begriffe "Component Software", Componentware" oder Komponentensoftware" haben sich zu echten Schlagworten in der Informationstechnik gemausert, die in Fachzeitschriften auftauchen und in wissenschaftlichen Veröffentlichungen behandelt werden. Aber worin liegt dieses Interesse in Komponentensoftware begründet? Zahlreiche Untersuchungen ergaben, daß ein Großteil der in Auftrag gegebenen traditionellen Softwareprojekte aufgrund komplexer Schnittstellenanforderungen, interoperabler Datenbankanbindungen und heterogener Netzwerkarchitekturen, die vom Auftraggeber angestrebten Ziele bestenfalls unzureichend erfüllen bzw. sogar als gescheitert bezeichnet werden können. Die Intensität der Diskussion ist aber oftmals auch nur auf Marketingaktivitäten einzelner Unternehmen zurückzuführen, die mit den Schlagworten ihren Produkten einen modernen, innovativen Anstrich geben möchten. Durch die massive Verwendung der Begriffe herrscht eine Unklarheit über die Inhalte der eigentlichen Technologien. Einigkeit besteht scheinbar nur bei den Zielen, die mit der Entwicklung von Komponenten und Komponentensoftware einhergehen sollen. An erster Stelle steht dabei das Thema Wiederverwendung von einzelnen Komponenten oder ganzen Systemen. Im Idealfall entsteht ein Markt auf dem einzelne Komponenten gehandelt und anschließend zu benutzerdefinierten Gesamtapplikationen verknüpft werden. Die Vorteile der Entwicklung von Anwendungssystemen aus Komponenten lassen sich im Wesentlichen durch die Begriffe Arbeitsteilung, Wiederverwendung, Zuverlässigkeit, Beherrschbarkeit und systematische Variation charakterisieren. Vergessen wird oft, daß der Einsatz von Komponenten mit einem Paradigmenwechsel in der Herstellung von Software verbunden.
