Potrei dare la colpa delle mie scelte criminali alla mia infanzia infelice o alle botte che ho preso prima in collegio dalle suore e dai preti e subito dopo nelle carceri minorili (a soli quindici anni sono stato legato al letto di contenzione per sette giorni).
Io, però, preferisco non darmi nessuna attenuante perché, come dico spesso: "Sono nato colpevole, ma poi io ci ho messo del mio per diventarlo".
Sono nato in provincia di Catania, e ho vissuto fino all'età di dieci anni in Sicilia, una terra bellissima, ma un ambiente pieno di difficoltà, ancora drammaticamente attuali.
Abitavo in una piccola casa, in periferia del paese, di due stanze e una cucina, in una viuzza chiusa.
Io e i miei fratelli, uno più piccolo e l'altro più grande, dormivamo in cucina, due in un letto e l'altro in un altro lettino.
Il nonno e uno zio erano andati a lavorare in Svizzera, mentre mio padre era emigrato in Francia.
Passavo le giornate nella viuzza insieme a tutti gli altri bambini, scalzi e affamati, ma felici di stare tutto il giorno fuori di casa a scorrazzare per i campi e a rubare la frutta, a salire sugli alberi, andare a caccia di lucertole e rane.
Spesso alla sera, quando rientravo a casa, non c'era quasi nulla da mangiare e sia io che i miei fratelli andavamo a letto dopo aver mangiato solo pane bagnato nello zucchero.
A volte mia nonna mi portava con lei a fare la spesa al mercato e mi aveva addestrato che mentre lei dava da parlare io dovevo rubare quello che potevo.
Una volta mi scoprirono e mi arrivò uno schiaffo in faccia da mia nonna, mentre mi gridava: - Quante volte ti devo dire che non devi rubare!
Poi a casa mi diede il resto, sia perché mi ero fatto scoprire e sia perché le avevo fatto fare brutta figura.
All'età di sei anni andai a scuola ma le mie assenze furono così tante che fui bocciato.
Una volta mentre andavo a scuola trovai un gattino, lo presi, lo misi nella mia cartella e, non potendo rientrare a casa, lo portai con me a scuola.
Durante la lezione il gatto si mise a miagolare e la maestra scoprì il gatto, fui espulso dalla scuola per dieci giorni. Anche in seconda elementare fui bocciato, ci riprovai l'anno appresso e passai in terza elementare.
Ma ormai per la mia famiglia ero già grande per iniziare a lavorare: avevo nove anni e andai a lavorare con mio zio nella muratura.
Mio fratello, come al solito, era stato più fortunato di me, era andato a lavorare in una pasticceria e così poteva mangiare tutti i giorni iris, arancini, cannoli e paste di mandorle.
In seguito, a causa della separazione dei miei genitori, fui costretto ad emigrare con mia madre e i miei fratelli in Liguria, a La Spezia.
Per poi essere rinchiuso in collegio, dove mi sono sempre mancati la famiglia, gli effetti, l'amore, un punto a cui aggrapparmi per sfogare le mie angosce e la mia tristezza di adolescente abbandonato a se stesso.
Qualche mese lo passai nel collegio di Cerri, in provincia di La Spezia.
Mi mancava la Sicilia, la viuzza, le zie, la nonna, i miei fratelli, mi mancavano pure le botte e i calci nel culo che mi dava mio zio durante il lavoro.
Non riuscivo ad adattarmi alle regole rigide del collegio.
Non volevo farmi il segno della croce prima di mangiare, non volevo stare composto a tavola e mangiare con le posate.
Un giorno scappai per i campi e, dopo una terribile notte di paura passata a dormire all'aria aperta.
Mi ripresero l'indomani dei contadini e mi portarono dal prete che dirigeva il collegio.
Questo mi riempì di botte e mi rinchiuse in una stanza al buio, senza acqua e senza mangiare.
Ancora adesso ricordo quei giorni come se fosse allora e provo la stessa rabbia di allora. Il prete era alto e grosso come una montagna, era vestito tutto di nero, con un grosso bastone in mano e mi disse: - Bastardo, volevi scappare? Dopo questa lezione non scapperai più.
