I grew up in a Japanese family in the Philippines. My dad used to calmly tell me, "It doesn't matter if you die, we don't need girls." I read a lot to arm myself against my dad's twisted values. I was 20 years old and had reached the limit of my patience with this environment, so I decided to give up on my family of origin.
