Pero, una vez rese�ados aqu�llos, y llegando fatal mente a otro per�odo m�s terrible y lastimoso, cual fu� el de la sangrienta y feroz reaccion absolutista, que lanz� a la nacion en todos los horrores de la sa�a pol�tica, de las venganzas personales, de la persecucion contra el saber y el patriotismo, mi conciencia literaria y mi pluma nada agresiva se rehusan a seguir por este camino y a trazar un cuadro repugnante, ante el cual (segun la frase, m�s expresiva que culta, de mi amigo el ilustre Donoso Cor t�s) aparto la vista con horror y el est�mago con asco. - Porque, a decir verdad, �qu� desenfado qu� humoris mo (y perd�neme nuestra Real Academia esta palabra) cabe ante situacion tan violenta; ante la perspectiva del pat�bulo casi permanente; ante la sa�a y la violencia de las malas pasiones suscitadas contra una sociedad entera; ante el embrutecimiento de las turbas; ante la proserip cion de las ideas generosas y levantadas; ante las comi siones militares ante los desafueros pol�ticos de los Cha perones, Herreros - Prieto y Recachos que reprodujeron entre nosotros, aunque en sentido inverso, el Comit� de Salud p�blica y el T ribunal revolucionario de 1793? Francamente, yo no veo ninguno; v dado este conflicto, c�mpleme abrir un par�ntesis de algunos a�os en esta parte de mi narracion, torn�ndola a su cauce natural, que, como ya queda repetido, es el m�s halagiie�o cam po de la vida social y la progresiva marcha de su cultura en todas sus manifestac10nes, y muy particularmente en el progreso literario y civilizador de la �poca, a cuyos dos objetos dediqu� exclusivamente mi vida entera; sin perder de vista, empero, aunque en segundo t�rmino, el giro de los sucesos pol�ticos, que tanta influencia ejercie ron en el gran desarrollo de la vida moderna.
