Catherwood (1847-1902) was an American writer of popular historical romance, short stories and poetry who was known for her strong interest in American dialects and for bringing a high standard of historical accuracy to the period detail of her fiction. In later life she developed an interest in early French culture in North America and the stories in this collection first published in 1899 are set around the Great Lakes along the Canadian-US border and on colonial Mackinac Island.
