The causal fungus is seed - borne, and can survive for several months in stored seed. Evidence was found that it is largely 011 entirely dead by the second planting time, or after about 18 months' storage.

Optimum temperature for mycelial growth of the strain of this fungus used 011 agar is near 25° C. The mycelium made no growth, but was not killed, in 13 days at Very slight growth was made in 5 days at but death occurred in that time at At 51° the spores were killed in 10 minutes. Conidia that. Were removed from pods and kept dry died in less than a month.
