Publisher's Synopsis
Excerpt from Labour and Industry in Australia, Vol. 4 of 4: From the First Settlement in 1788 to the Establishment of the Commonwealth in 1901
Early in 1873 the discovery of gold was reported in the Northern Territory, and a number of companies were formed in Adelaide to work the deposits, which rumour had greatly magnified. There was much speculation in the Shares of these companies and also in those of the copper_ mines, but little gold was won from the mines of the Northern Territory; and the drop in the price of the metal concerned put an end to the speculation in copper shares.
