Publisher's Synopsis

Excerpt from La Bodega: The Fruit of the Vine

To him the fruitful Grape is a source of bitter fruit indeed; he summons the humble and lowly to forsake the illusory joys of the beverage - to endeavor and dis pute in a noble pursuit that is far from vain.

It is of interest to note that the city about which the action of the novel centers - Jerez de la Frontera - gives the name to sherry. The former spelling of Jerez was with an X, anciently pronounced like sh. The full name of the town signifies Jerez of the Frontier. It is situated some fifteen miles from Cadiz. Another point of interest in connection with wine-manufacture in this district is that the bodegas, or wine-sheds, are above ground.
