Alédon, l'ainé d'Oméron est nommé au titre de Premier Prince et doit prendre la succession de son père à la tête du Royaume des Seigneurs de l'Ouest. Mais il tombe amoureux d'Isa-Belle, ambassadrice Oltros du royaume des Hommes-Oiseaux et décide, avec elle, se s'enfuir loin des territoires de l'Alliance des Six.Artal découvre leur fugue. Il prévient le roi et se lance à la poursuite des fugitifs. Il finit par les retrouver, mais ému par leur amour, il leur permet d'échapper à la capture.Alors que le roi se meure, à Teskos, la capitale, le fidèle chambellan, Harus, favorise se second fils d'Oméron.Soligno, marié et père de la jeune Cassigna, finit par accéder à la régence. Bien servi par des liens vassaliques forts, Soligno emporte même le consentement d'Artal, pourtant désigné comme Second Prince lors du tournoi.L'équilibre du royaume et de l'Alliance des Six semble restauré.Néanmoins, dans les marais de l'Est des Lacs-Unis, les reines Môrk, cheftaines des Hydres Noires trament un nouveau complot. Aidées par une sorcellerie tirée du dieu du chaos, dont elles favorisent le retour dans le monde d'Héria, elles échappent à l'extra-lucidité du Grand Devin Hel. Elles invoquent en secret d'anciennes démones, les Filles de l'Hydre Primitives et elles éliminent leurs dernières rivales, les reines Bâatral.Môrk s'allient aux Hommes-Lézards du Lélïoutch, font assassiner l'empereur des Hommes-Poissons qui promettait de se mettre en travers de leur route et fomentent un coup de force dont l'Alliance des Six ne se remettra pas.Un seul homme semble être capable de faire échec aux reines Môrk: Artal. En effet, alors que son frère Soligno s'empare de la régence, il accomplit une dernière mission en tant que chevalier et s'oppose à Ao Tunoa, le commodore des pirates du Lélïoutch. Du même coup, il délivre une esclave Yxo dont la beauté est sans égal et en tombe éperdument amoureux. Rapidement amants, Uziladaée la Claire et Artal de Galreg vont vivre quelques jours de pur bonheur.Mais l'intervention d'un sorcier, aussi persuasif que mystérieux, Sivhud, ravit la jeune Yxo et laisse le prince face à son propre destin.
