La retta soluzione di un tale problema non ci puo ve nire d'altronde che dall'esame coscienzioso delle opere d'arte che destarono allora tanto entusiasmo; tutto cio che possiamo ricavare dallo studio dei costumi, delle con dizioni della vita pubblica, della scienza, della filosofia, appare in queste come in sintesi luminosa, perche il poeta attinge piu d'ogni altro alle sorgenti della vita univer sale, e non c'e lato della coscienza in cui egli non s'ad dentri come per intuito; il filosofo, _ lo scienziato cercano di tracciare alla mente le vie per cui essa giunga al pos sesso del vero ma bisogna ricorrere alla rappresentazione fantastica del poeta per conoscere quanta parte di questo vero le generazioni abbiano accettata, per sapere quali ideali vagheggino, a quali contraddizioni siano in preda, a quali credenze voglian tenersi tenacemente avvinti. Di piu, anima della poesia e il sentimento: onde soltanto il poeta puo farci intendere in qual maniera e in qual mi sura i suoi contemporanei abbiano amato e gioito e sof ferto, vale a dire come e quanto abbiano vissuto. I do cumenti diplomatici, le cronache, itrattati non ci fanno conoscere il medio-evo: ma lo conosciamo nella Divina Commedia. E vero che di Opere come questa, opere cioe che si possano chiamare una sintesi del lavorio lento di secoli, l'ingegno umano non ne produce che assai poche e di rado; le direi pietre migliari collocate dal genio a indi care le conquiste progressive fatte dal pensiero nel tempo. Ma non percio si debbono trascurare le minori, le quali ci dimostrano appunto le difficolta del cammino, gl'improvvisi ostacoli che parvero insuperabili talora, i frequenti travia menti, le lotte continuate e tenaci. Non ci possono essere nella storia delle vere soluzioni di continuita e nemmeno dei veri periodi di stazionarieta o di regresso: la ten denza a camminare in avanti e invincibile nelle genera zioni, le quali possono bensi ingannarsi nella scelta della via, ma non mai tornare sui proprii passi. Nel mondo fisico come nel morale e un continuo variare di forme e quella che succede ha sempre qualche cosa in piu della precedente. Ma come avviene appunto nel mondo della materia, che per giungere a una forma di maggior eccel lenza la natura deve sottostare a una serie di esperienze laboriose e non sempre liete di esito felice, cosi nel mondo dello spirito, dove le resistenze sono per avventura anco maggiori. Per la qual ragione, i/se ci avviene di incon trarei talora in qualche prodotto dello spirito che ci paia o sia veramente deforme e pure {abbia in certa epoca incontrato il favore di tutti, invece di spregiarlo e con dannarlo all'oblio e miglior partito esaminarlo' con atten zione singolare; prima perche, come effetto immediato di certe condizioni della vita, ci rivela un momento psico logico non di un solo individuo ma di una generazione, poi perche e impossibile che non contenga in se qualche elemento o almeno qualche tentativo di novita salutare.
