History of the Thirty Years' War in Germany (Illustrated Edition)

Schiller (1759-1805) was a German poet, philosopher, physician, historian and playwright who, during the last 17 years of his life struck up a productive friendship with the already influential Goethe. They frequently discussed issues concerning aesthetics and Schiller encouraged Goethe to finish works he had left as sketches. Together they founded the Weimar Theatre, a collaborative effort that led to the renaissance of drama in Germany. Schiller's philosophical work was particularly concerned with the question of human freedom, a preoccupation which also guided his historical researches, such as The Thirty Years' War and the Dutch Revolt, and then found its way into his dramas. The Thirty Years' War was fought primarily in Central Europe from 1618-48 and was one of the most destructive conflicts in human history. This English translation of Schiller's history of the war was made by the Reverend A J W Morrison and includes six illustrations.
