My father, Stephen' Barlow Espy, left Pennsylvania for Fort Madison, Iowa, then the far west, in 1846. At the time of his death I was a small child, and never knew any of the Espys, except the family of my uncle, Thos. S. Espy, and they too, grew up far from the parent stock. Naturally I was both ignorant of, and curious about my ancestry.
