When retired CIA agent Jack Hammer's lady friend discovers an undiscovered journal written by Ernest Hemingway in the 1930s, it is the literary find of a lifetime. In the journal, Hemingway describes a rescue he made of a shipwrecked bonus marcher who survived in shark-infested seas with no food or water for a week in the waters off Cuba. Hemingway and his first mate Gregorio Fuentes help nurse the survivor back to health, and then the great writer takes him back to Key West where he sets him up with a place to live and a job at Hemingway's favorite bar Sloppy Joe's. It is a harrowing tale, and it brings out the generous nature of the adventurer and writer who has captured the public's imagination until the present day.
