Publisher's Synopsis

Children of deaf adults will share a laugh or a cry with Liz, the daughter of Frank and Evie. Even though it is an autobiography, this is written as a novel. Frank and Evie lived out their lives without the services or technology of today for the Deaf. They lived fortunate lives not realizing what it really meant to be deaf in a "hearing world." Questions arise in their deaf lives as they become acquainted with their peers throughout life. When Mama gave Evie an unusually tight hug, Evie knew something was very wrong. She had never seen her mama with this look of fear on her face. Was she angry? Or, was it sadness? It was never easy to discern her mother's emotions. What had Evie done to cause her parents to do this? Evie was only sure of one thing, Mama had never acted this way before. Why was she walking away from her toward the entryway? Evie ran after her, gesturing to go with her as she grabbed her sleeve. Shaking her head negatively, Evie made it as clear as she could - she did not want to stay in this strange place! Mama paused long enough to look her daughter square in the face, mouthing "No. You stay." Then Mama turned her back to retreat down the hallway at a faster pace. Evie stared after her in disbelief. She watched her mother walk right past Papa who was sitting on a bench waiting, and on out those big doors without another look back at Evie. Papa simply nodded his head in Evie's direction and joined his wife before the door closed behind them.
