Mais bientôt, l'admirable découverte des instruments grossissants appliquée à l'anatomie vint ajouter un nouveau sens à l'observateur et lui permit de pénétrer plus avant, dans ses plus petits détails, la struc ture des tissus. C'était la l'instrument d'une révolution dans1es sciences biologiques: caril ne faut pas s'y tromper, le microscope ne fait pas seulement apprécier mieux les détails d'une chose connue; l'histologie n'est pas seulement le complément de l'anatomie normale et patholo gique: tout au contraire, elle en est la base. Des exemples rendront manifeste ma pensée. Lorsqu'on aura constaté qu'un viscère, le foie, ou une tumeur, un cancer du sein, par exemple, sont constitués dans les quatre cinquièmes de leur masse par des éléments visibles seule ment au microscope; lorsqu'on saura que ces éléments ou cellules sont de petits corps dans lesquels, en dernière analyse, s'individuaiise la vie, qu'ils naissent, se nourrissent, se reproduisent, s'ellèrent et se détruisent; quelle conclusion en tirerons-nous relativement àla phy siologie et a la pathologie, en ce qui touche la glande hépatique ou la tumeur cancéreuse'?
