Publisher's Synopsis

Vasilij Kandinskij (1866-1944) is one of the most innovative and influential artists of the 20th century. In 1896 he left his hometown Moscow to study painting in Munich. Here he created an abstract imagery around 1910, with which he caused quite a sensation among his audience. At the same time he edited the famous almanac Der Blaue Reiter with Franz Marc. At the time, the declared internationalism of the Blue Rider was opposed to a national principle that decisively shaped the discussion of Kandinskys work. The present study offers for the first time a systematic presentation of the different perspectives on the "Russians" Kandinsky in Germany, analyzes them in their respective contexts and illuminates them in their chronological development from 1912 to 1945.
