Publisher's Synopsis

Battered women and children who have themselves been the targets of physical or sexual abuse are the focus of much research. The aim of this work is to examine the effects on children who are exposed to violence between domestic partners. It provides theories and research on this topic and analyzes the complex interactions that determine outcomes.;Why is it that some children are greatly affected by the violence, whereas others appear to be functioning quite well? Multiple determinants seem to be involved, including the quality of parenting, family and community characteristics, the gender and temperament of the child and the type of violence. Through analysis of the available research, the contributors to this volume explore the kinds of interventions that are most likely to be effective with these children, and the factors that should guide decisions about custody. The book should be of interest to researchers in family violence, developmental psychologists, policy makers and practitioners.
