The University of Sydney's cultural and scientific collections began as a core set of antiquities purchased by Sir Charles Nicholson, first Chancellor of the University. These collections have grown in size and breadth and are now one of the largest holdings in the southern hemisphere: they include some of the earliest known Aboriginal bark paintings, Ancient Egyptian artefacts, Greek vases, entomology specimens and modernist artworks.
