Publisher's Synopsis

Carl Sternheim, the 'German Molière', is certainly not a forgotten author. The 'Bürgerschreck' of the early twentieth century had a renaissance of sorts in the 1970s, evidenced by the reissue of his works - in addition to the critical edition by Wilhelm Emrich and Manfred Linke, most of his major plays and one volume of prose are now available in paperback. Nevertheless, Sternheim is not a household word, not in Germany, and certainly not abroad. In 1992, the 50th anniversary of Sternheim's death (November 1942) provided the impetus for a symposium, held at the Institute of Germanic Studies in London, which aimed to take another look at the author and his work, to examine the significance of his work today, its importance outside the German-speaking countries, his position in the greater context of German and European literature, theatre, music and philosophy.
