Allein Palmerston's Thitigkeit auf diesem Felde war nicht bloss eine verneinende, min nach eine wieder anfbnuende. Er hat auch ein Regulativ fur die Benutzung der am Friedhofe ausserhalb der Stadt erlassen, worin genau die Lange, Breite und Tiefe der vuschisdenen Graber und ihre Entfernung von einander wie von der Kirchhofsmaner vor geschrieben wird. Jedes Grab muss sofort entweder mit einer steinernen oder einer P?an sndscke versehen werden und darf unter keinen Umstanden eine nackte Ober?ache haben; bei neu anzulegenden Begribnissplatzen muss zuerst ein Grab ums andere benutzt werden, souss allemal eine ubersprnngen wird; der Zeitraum, bis wann die Graber nicht wieder mgsgraba: werden durfen, ist genau bestimmt, wurde fur uns Deutsche aber noch immer zu kurz sein (bei Kindern dauert er, denke ich, nur 10 Jahre); mehrere Sarge durfen in ein untl dasselbe Grab oder Gewolbe nur auf ausdrucklichen Wunsch der Hinterbliebenen be stattet werden, und zwar muss in diesem Falle jede Leiche in einen luftdichten metallenen Sarg gelegt werden. Sie finden das Alles vielleicht ganz naturlich und selbstverstundlich und when kein grosses Verdienst dabei; allein vergessen Sie nieht, dass das hiesige Kirch hufs und Begubnisswesen ein wahrer augiasstdl war, von dessen Reinigung bereits where Minister, Committees und Vereine haben abstehen mussen. Das Nachste was die deutliche Stimme vom edeln Lord jetzt erwartete, war die Reform der Londoner Sewerage, d. In. Des Systems der Abzugskanale, und die damit verbundene Reinigung der Themse. Ware es Palmerstod gelungen, die Themse aus einem pest-erzeugenden Pfuhl voller Unrath zu einem klaren, erfrischenden, lieblicben Stroms umzugestalten, so hatte er damit allein tim Burgerkrone verdient und sich ein unsterbliches Verdienst um London erworben wel dies unter den gegenwartigen Umstanden mit Paris um den Namen der 'kothstadt' (lutetia)
