Esta novela se encuentra inspirada en El descenso de Inanna al Inframundo, obra literaria mesopotámica de la antigua Sumeria grabada sobre tablillas de barro, escrito en cuneiforme y redactado en forma de poema. Cuenta el viaje de la diosa sumeria Inanna al Inframundo para visitar y, al parecer, desafiar el poder de su hermana Ereshkigal que había enviudado recientemente. El poema está cargado de significado y simbolismos, y ha sido objeto de interpretaciones muy diversas.
Año 4035 a. C. Inanna la diosa del amor, la pasión, fertilidad y la guerra, biznieta de An el dios del Cielo y hermana de Utu Heru dios del sol, desciende al Irkalla en el inframundo para ver a su hermana la diosa Ereshkigal, y esta la retiene prisionera. Los siete jueces dictaminan que quien desciende a La tierra del no retorno no sale más. Dumuzzi el esposo de Inanna solicita ayuda a los dioses, que no quieren interferir en asuntos de otros. Respetando las reglas del inframundo, An se mantiene también al margen sin tomar partido por ninguna de las dos.Astraía, la diosa guerrera de fuego, la hija menor y más querida de An y reina de la Gran hermandad de las Señoras de los Sueños, baja al Irkalla para enfrentar a Ereshkigal y sus reptilianos y rescatar a Inanna. En el último momento recibe una valiosa ayuda inesperada. Varios días después, Astraía tiene que ayudar a su esposo Akiiku-dul Alim Ensu, el rey de Ugarit, para repeler un gran ataque de venganza contra la ciudad, por parte de los feroces reptilianos y otra raza alienígena hostil de las que estaban en el inframundo. Pero no era todo, porque el mayor peligro para el planeta estaba por llegar sigiloso desde el espacio profundo.Esta novela transcurre en el año 4035 a. C. sesenta años después de los sucesos de la novela Astraía Nin-Ugarit, la Gran Señora de los Sueños, que es la precuela de la Tetralogía almas Gemelas. Sin embargo, esta segunda novela de la serie Astraía es una novela independiente sin conexión de continuación con la otra.
Motivado a que superó las mil paginas, por conveniencia editorial fue dividida en dos tomos y este es el primero.
