Publisher's Synopsis

Excerpt from As God Made Her: A Story of a Fair Californian

Through the Open door and out on the flower-hung veranda Dr. Harding led the way. He was a tall, well built, energetic man with deep expressive eyes; his features were even and the earnest face full of the scholar's thought, was framed in abundant locks which, here and there, were touched with gray. He was the son of a farmer back in New England mountains; but his classic features, his walk, his every motion gave proof of native nobility. The peaceful nook we have described was his home. He had bought the fertile acres here in the lovely Santa Clara Valley years be fore. Then only the two oak trees stood upon it and he had expended his taste in the improvements, and had superintended not only the planting but the cul ture of every tree and shrub. In the practice of his profession here life had gone smoothly on unmarked by any event save his marriage, the birth of his daugh ter, and the death of his wife, when the child was at the age of five years.
