Nel mito greco, Melampo, figlio di Amitaone e di Idomenea, è un celebre veggente in gradod'intendere le voci degli animali e di risanare. Con tale modello eccellente sul piedistallo, i dueautori hanno imbastito questo particolarissimo romanzo.Diviso in ventinove capitoli, Arais vede l'omonima protagonista, "una filologa sgobbona" (p.9) in perpetua schermaglia con il suo "strambo pigmalione ... il mio "folletto-provocatore autonominatosi Lastruso" (ibidem), raccontare la propria storia in una tessitura di materiali a più voci, digiochi di parole funambolici, di fantasie scatenate: una storia che non si esaurisce nei corti limiti diuna vita umana, ma risale il DNA fino a un'Eva precedente Adamo, sguazza nel mito del Melampogreco e tra le ramificazioni di altri connessi, fa incursioni nel medioevo del gioco di San Cosma(dove il trovatore Adam de la Halle detto Le Bossù amoreggia con la protopunk Meletta e incontraPietro da Morrone) e in momenti successivi fino all'età contemporanea. Ma in qualche modo lafigura femminile è sempre lei, Arais Melampo, personaggio che varca il tempo: è Suor Pia amica diGalileo, Yagruma nella Cuba del tardo Cinquecento, l'Arais drammaturga-regista amica di Mazzinie del rivoluzionario cubano José Martí (l'incontro tra i due all'Avana, "Pippo" e "Pepe", ci vieneanzi narrato in modo particolareggiato), l'Aracelis rispuntata a Cuba negli anni Cinquanta delNovecento a fianco dello scrittore-pittore Joaquin Hemingway, tra ispirazioni artistiche e tango. Perritrovarsi ai nostri giorni "Arais Melampo Marino filologa bilingue, archivista, storica dell'arte, lapiù giovane vaticanista" (p. 150) nella curia di papa Francesco. Qui la storia inanella alcunisiparietti similteatrali dal carattere vagamente surrealista, tra erotismo e scatologia, la cui mattatriceassoluta Arais delizia il pigmalione Lastruso: Negli ultimi tempi gli è capitato di rado leggere qualcosa di entusiasmante già dalle prime battute. Saràche si sente molto coinvolto, sarà che ha sottovalutato la sua coautrice... adesso però è sbalordito, macontentissimo delle tante sorprese.Di colpo si rende conto di godersi un privilegio, la compagnia di una donna meravigliosa che lo adora enon è una qualunque adorante avvezza ad adorare, è tutt'altro. Sa il fatto suo, tanto da poter sovrastarecon la sua intelligenza chicchessia.Il più delle volte, invece, se ne sta in disparte a coltivare la sua leggerezza e mostrarsi tanto sbarazzina, ultramoderna da smentire i molti benpensanti e i loro cliché che la considerano una persona: pronta aqualsiasi esperienza. È invece una curiosa esploratrice che va dritta allo scopo, tenendo poco in conto leopinioni giudiziose.Il racconto che sta leggendo lo infervora, lo eccita come se l'avesse scritto lui e rileggendolo nota pocheimprecisioni. Lo trova eccellente, una rarità. (p. 167, in corsivo nell'originale)Eccetera. A un certo punto entrano in scena persino due autori (che però qui sono due maschi - p.173 e poi in realtà si rivelano uno solo, p. 174), segue un parto... e torniamo alla parte narrativa, con Arais ormai segretaria di papa Francesco che estorce con mossa boccaccesca a due alti prelati lanon opposizione al fatto che il pontefice risieda fuori dal "museo di San Pietro" (p. 186). Si tornainfine all'Arais Melampo scrittrice nel momento in cui decide di farsi personaggio per amore delcompagno; e tutto si chiude con un Piccolo saggio sull'etimologia dotato di Nota a margine, unpaio di altre liriche, una cronologia (parziale) degli eventi e un Post scriptum con il lavoro teatraledi Arais su Mazzini.Questo pastiche letterario sapido, vagamente erotizzante e frizzante è da consumare lentamente non trascurando le poche controindicazioni che potrebbero renderlo indigesto.
