The Anne of Green Gables is a 1908 book by Canadian author Lucy Maud Montgomery (published as LM Montgomery). Written for all ages, it has been regarded as the oldest children's novel from the 20th century. Compiled in the late 19th century, the novel tells the story of Anne Shirley, an 11-year-old orphan girl, who was mistakenly sent to her two middle-aged colleagues, Matthew and Marilla Cuthbert, who first intended to find a boy to help them on their farm in the fictional town of Avonlea in Prince Edward. Island, Canada. The novel tells of how Anne spent her life with the Cuthberts, at school and in the city.
