Publisher's Synopsis

An Outcast of the Islands is a novel by Joseph Conrad, first published in 1896. The story follows the life of a man named Willems, who is an outcast from his own society due to his dishonesty and betrayal. He seeks refuge on a remote island in the Malay Archipelago, where he becomes involved with the local community and falls in love with a native woman. However, his past catches up with him and he is forced to flee once again. The novel explores themes of morality, colonialism, and the clash of cultures. It is considered one of Conrad's early masterpieces and a precursor to his later works, such as Heart of Darkness.A run of bad luck at cards, the failure of a small speculation undertaken on his own account, an unexpected demand for money from one or another member of the Da Souza family--and almost before he was well aware of it he was off the path of his peculiar honesty. It was such a faint and ill-defined track that it took him some time to find out how far he had strayed amongst the brambles of the dangerous wilderness. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. Because we believe this work is culturally important, we have made it available as part of our commitment for protecting, preserving, and promoting the world's literature in affordable, high quality, modern editions, that are true to their original work.
