Publisher's Synopsis
Excerpt from An Address: Delivered Before the Citizens of Becket, Mass; January 18, 1839; Upon the Subject of Slavery
In noticing the causes that have led and are leading to this change of condition, I have somewhat encroached upon the next point to be noticed, viz. The evils to which abolitionism m the non-slaveholding states, or perhaps, _more appropriate ly speaking, Northern interference must' of necessity give birth. Those who have never witnessed'a negro insurrecj tion can form but an inadequate idea of its attendant hori rors heart rending as are the effects of battles between con; tending nations, or the yet more sanguinary warfare of do meatic strife, they dwindle into insignificance when contrasted with the scenes to which I_have so feebly so faintly and so imperfect] y alluded; but what pen can portray, what' lan guage can do them justice and yet there are many who for want of jorethought are lending themselves to produce their more frequent repetition.
