The research program on axial-flow fans and compressors for advanced air breath ing engines being conducted at the nasa Lewis Research Center is primarily directed toward improving the performance and reducing the size, weight, and cost of these components. As a part of this program, experimental studies have been conducted on fan stages with Variable-pitch-rotor - blades suitable for use in engines for powered - lift aircraft (refs. 1 to The results from these investigations indicated that some of the various flight requirements could be achieved using engines with such fan stages.
