Publisher's Synopsis
Adaptation is seen as a process of change. The adaptations in the Soviet Union, China, Eastern Europe and elsewhere are a result in part of internal change or internal decay in those countries.;In some cases the changes are modelled on or stimulated by similar changes in one of the other communist states.;All of them are affected by changes in the international environment, in the complex of relations within the socialist community and in the dynamic of East-West relations and even the East-South situation. Adaptation occurs gradually, involving ideology, structures, elite and mass participation and decisions about the allocation of resources.;Each area of society is examined by an expert in the field and the conclusions are drawn up by the editors.
