This publication contains a collection of papers about the abolition of slavery in the French colonies, presented at an international conference held in Paris in 1994 to commemorate the bicentenary of the first abolition of slavery in Saint-Domingue in 1793 and ratified by a decree of the National Convention in 1794. It discusses the complex developments that led to the decree of 1848 which permanently abolished slavery in the French domains. It focuses largely on the revolutionary and Napoleonic periods, but also includes comparative approach through the addition of papers examining abolitionist movements in America, Britain and Spain.
