Deux grandes cha�nes de montagnes traversent parall�lement le P�rou, du sud-sud - ouest au nord nord-est. La cha�ne la plus rapproch�e de la c�te du Pacifique est a une vingtaine de lieues de la mer. L'autre, en suivant la m�me direction, fait une l�g�re courbe vers l'est. Ces deux grandes lignes se nomment indiff�remment les Andes ou les Cordill�res. Les cr�oles du P�rou confondent eux-m�mes ces deux termes. Cependant il y a la une distinction a faire. La cha�ne Occidentale de vrait s'appeler la Cordill�re, et l'autre les Andes. Cette d�nomination vient de l'ancien idiome qui chua. Elle est un d�riv� et un abr�g� d'antasuyu qui signifie district de cuivre On a d'abord dit Ant�, puis Andes.
