Lawrence Schoolcraft (1757-1840) was a soldier and early industrialist who marched toward Quebec in 1775, defended Fort Stanwix in 1777, and helped man Schoharie's Middle fort in 1780. Later, he established and managed glassworks in upstate New York and in Keene New Hampshire.This previously unpublished portrait, written on the eve of the Civil War by his son, explorer and pioneer ethnologist Henry Rowe Schoolcraft, has been carefully transcribed from a document found among his papers in the Library of Congress.
