Perhaps it was his Irish grandmother, who became ill as an infant on an immigrant ship to New Orleans and was almost thrown overboard, that instilled in him how to deal with life's uncertainties by continuing to live to the fullest. He and his loving wife, Judy, raised their five children in Austin, Texas,
