Entgegen der auf hohe Wachstumsraten konzentrierten allgemeinen Offentlichkeit, betont die Wirtschaftsjournalistin Quinglian He in ihrem Werk vor allem die selten erwahnte Seite der Modernisierung - namlich die Verlierer des rasanten chinesischen Aufstiegs. Vor dem Hintergrund eines kontinuierlich uberdurchschnittlichen Wirtschaftswachstums geraten die "Modernisierungsverlierer," klassifiziert in der doch betrachtlichen landlichen Bevolkerung, zusehend ins Dunkel. In ihrer durch eigene lokale Recherchen gestutzten Analyse beleuchtet die Autorin vorrangig die makrookonomische Entwicklung der letzten 20 Jahre, unterfuttert mit kurzen historischen Verweisen auf die Zeit der Kulturrevolution und den im Jahre 1978 einsetzenden Reformen in der Volksrepublik. Die Verfasserin erortert in zwolf umfangreichen Kapiteln, dass sich im Zuge der bemerkenswerten Offnung des Lan-des und der heute vergleichsweise groeren gesellschaftlichen Freiheiten eine besorgniserregende Schere zwischen Arm und Reich aufgetan hat. Dabei untersucht He nicht nur die strukturellen Probleme des Landes in den prekaren Unterschieden zwischen Stadt- und Landbevolkerung, sondern insbesondere die Unvereinbarkeit von freier Marktwirtschaft und politischer Einmischung durch die Kommunistische Partei. An sozialer Ungleichheit gemessen, belegt China international einen Spitzenplatz. Lediglich 15 Prozent der Menschen verfugen uber 85 Prozent des gesellschaftlichen Vermogens.
