Publisher's Synopsis
As a Crew Chief in the Army Air Corps, Walter Mauritzen saw almost every plane the Air Corps flew. He maintained the P-40 Warhawk, the B-26 Maurader, the A-20 Havoc, the P-47 Thunderbolt, and the P-38 Lightening in his service with the 12th Air Force, 33rd Fighter Group, 59th Fighter Squadron. He was detailed for the attack on Mehdia, Morocco, where he invaded the Kenitra Kasbah with his Thompson submachine gun. His heart-stopping ground combat experience in Italy is also detailed in this book. In addition, Walter saw Sicily, China, and India in his war travels. While living in dugouts and sleeping on a straw mattress, often with no electricity or shower facilities available, his North African environmental experiences ranged from blowing dust on the airfields to a flash flood that almost washed him away. Mauritzen's diary of 1943, written during the North African campaign, is included here in its entirety, augmented with many explanatory segments and photographs. Come thrill to the true story of the life-and-death experiences of a Crew Chief of "The Greatest Generation."
