Publisher's Synopsis

The continuing problem of homelessness in cities is reviewed in this book through the detailed account of a two year study of homelessness in London commissioned in part by the Salvation Army and in part by an ESRC grant. It demonstrates the diversity and range of homeless people through findings from two large surveys of homeless people in London. By taking a psychological approach it makes an important addition to existing social and economic perspectives. - - The first part of the book presents an overview of the number, variety and distribution of homeless people in London, in hostels, squats, hotels and on the street. Comparisons are made with previous studies and general trends and estimates provided. The second part explores the differences between homeless people in a variety of settings. Each homeless setting has a very different style and face, both in terms of its qualities and also in the variety of the people who, for one reason or another, find themselves homeless in these ways. The psychological well-being of homeless people is examined and their reactions to their current circumstances. The third part of the book discusses provision and presents a model of hostel care. This system of hostel care has emerged primarily from a novel analysis of the views of residents of current provision. It also feeds directly from similar, but smaller systems in operation and the views of many, that a range of facilities must be provided to help the wide range of homeless people. - The book is essential reading for sociologists and psychologists concerned with homelessness and those designers and policy makers who are attempting to alleviate this perennial problem.
