The idea of publishing this address in the form in which it now appears was not entertained until it was about to be placed in the printer's hands a few days before delivery: this will explain the omission of notes and references which would have made for completeness. The author gladly takes the opportunity of stating that some valuable suggestions on the treatment of his subject were made by his esteemed friend, Professor Angus, of the Theological Hall, St. Andrew's College, Sydney, to whom his thanks are due. The responsibility, however, for the positions here affirmed and for all that is said is entirely the author's own. The statements made in the introductory paragraphs, if correct, supply obvious reasons for the publication of the address.
