In the near future, scientists discover a flickering artificial sun headed towards Earth. Code named "Deimos", this alien threat becomes the impetus for a massive outworld colonization program, the creation of an army of mechs to defend the planet, and a bioengineering initiative to adapt the human race to survive the apocalypse. As the artificial sun Deimos approaches Earth, Smiley ships attack. Deimon battleships retreat into the safety of the corona. Deimos enters Earth orbit creating massive tides and devastating coastal regions. The war is on and humans are losing. In order to live in a grayhouse winter on Earth, Doc Blaitel shows humans how to turn their brains into silicon/silver analogs that can be programmed to survive under the harshest conditions.
