Publisher's Synopsis
When the potato famine hit Ireland, the Carroll family decided to move to America. They knew if they stayed in Ireland, they would eventually starve to death like many of the people did. Jane the main character tells of her journey to America, her rough travel to rural Eastern Kentucky and their everyday life once they arrived. This life was a hard life and every family member worked from the wee hours of the morning to the end of the day's light to help the family survive. Of course Jane wouldn't have had it any other way.
