Conan Doyle's account of the Boer War was completed in September 1900 at a time when the British believed the war was over, and first published that year by Smith, Elder & Co. The author constantly revised it and by the end of the war in 1902 the book had been published in 16 editions. It is reprinted from the final edition, complete with maps and an appendix showing the numbers of those killed and wounded.
