Although consumer savings rates appear relatively high, reports on buying intentions point to some pick up in consumer purchases in coming months. Purchases of durables are expected to increase in 1968, reflecting another good auto year and increased purchases of household durables, particularly if homebuilding activity con tinnes to rise. Food purchases are expected to increase by 3 to 5 percent from this year, and spending for other nondurables and services will continue to rise with further gains in consumer incomes.
