Excerpt from Possneck: The Scene of Hermann Und Dorothea
Directly across the Breitestrasse from the Golden Lion stood the Dietrich house, since removed, and the langen, doppelten Hbfe of this house led directly to das untere Thor, which led out across den trockenen Graben to the gardens and vineyards, which extend in a consecutive line along the north side of the city. While going to see the Lowen garden with Mr. Theodor Muller, he volun teered the information, pointing to where the Dietrich house stood, Hier gingen wir durch. An engraving of Possneck from the year 1781, which represents the city practically as Goethe saw it, has by good luck been pre served and is here reproduced, Fig. 5 there are two copies in the city museum; it is about 20 x 45 cm. The View is towards the south and shows in the foreground the gardens surrounded by picket fences (sah durch die roten Staketen, III, with the fruit trees, and in one of the gardens are even seen the Weinstocks.
