Publisher's Synopsis
Standard BS 1363 three pin plugs for connecting to the UK public electricity supply must contain or be accompanied by a fuse link which conforms to BS1362:1973, as amended. However, 13 A fuse links bearing the letters PMS and the BSI Kitemark, manufactured in China by GTL and fitted in PMS-made standard three pin plugs, have failed BS 1362 requirements for breaking capacity at 6 kA.;This report assesses the safety risk to UK consumers of fuse links which do not meet the requirements for breaking capacity at 6 kA. It considers the implications for consumer safety of advising them about PMS 13 A fuse links thought to be non-compliant, and of advising them to replace any such fuse links found in their plugs. It also details experimental work carried out with filled, part-filled and fuse links with no filler present, to assess the protection provided by a plug housing if a fuse link fails. The work was commissioned by the DTI.
