Mary Ware, the nave, unabashed, enthusiastic young woman from the deserts of Arizona, and Ethelinda Hurst, a spoiled, aristocratic brat from the suburbs of Chicago, affect and influence each others' characters more than either could have predicted as they age and mature into proper young women.Johnston's Little Colonel Series enjoyed worldwide popularity in the early twentieth century, peaking in 1935 with the release of the eponymous film starring Shirley Temple. Through the success of her books, Johnston's strong support of the female education movement and her own moral code influenced and impacted generations of young women even in the years following her death.
